Indigenous Ranger Biosecurity Program

Northern Australia is vast, with almost 10,000km of coastal areas. From Cairns and Torres Strait in Queensland. To Darwin in the Northern Territory and across to Broome in Western Australia. It’s not only big the region is sparsely populated and largely undeveloped. It includes areas that are inaccessible during the wet season.

The region provides a critical defence and focus for Australia’s biosecurity effort.

Aquatic Health Awareness

Rangers can help us better understand, some key local factors involved in the monitoring of aquatic biosecurity risks, by completing this questionnaire.

Information that will assist with aquatic biosecurity risk analysis includes:

  • Yacht anchorages
  • Boat ramps
  • Commercial vessel anchorages
  • Recreational fishing areas popular with people visiting the community / area
  • Abandoned / shipwrecked vessels
  • Artificial structure or infrastructure which could home marine pests
  • Port / Wharf / Jetty / Loading dock
  • Marine debris hotspots*
  • Areas where ghost nets have been seen in the past

*The three biggest marine debris hot spots will be used for the aquatic field exercise.
