Consultation closed 3 August 2020.

The National Agricultural Labour Advisory Committee is preparing a National Agricultural Workforce Strategy for consideration by the Government. The strategy will recommend potential actions to address the future workforce needs of the:

  • agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries
  • closely allied service and supply chain industry sectors.

These actions will target:

  • school education
  • vocational education and training
  • higher education.

The aim is to attract, retain and upskill the domestic workforce. As well as identify where access to a migrant workforce will be necessary to meet industry needs.

The Australian Government supports the agriculture industry’s target of becoming a $100 billion sector by 2030. The target is very ambitious and will require industry and governments to work together. We need an environment that enables growth and supports the production of premium products that attract premium prices.

What’s next

The Committee has consulted extensively with stakeholders and has received submissions on its Discussion Paper. This input will inform the development of the National Agricultural Workforce Strategy. The Strategy will be presented to the Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management by the end of October 2020.
